In the recent week there's been a bit of a stir caused by an ANN news story; it seems Amazon was selling a bootleg DVD set of Sailor Stars as official. They've since removed the offending item.
When we say "Amazon sells this" or "Amazon updates that," we should separate the entity from the system. It's true that the main Amazon cart system was offering the product, but it's also likely that it was placed into their system by a secondary distribution channel. Amazon sells so many products that their employees don't always figure into the product listing equation. For example, their book selection is often based on lists of publisher ISBNs and external databases that they import into their own. That's why there are so many books on Amazon that you can't order directly from them, or why some books take 2-3 weeks to ship as opposed to 24 hours. What's interesting to me is not that Amazon had the product available (even through it's main cart system, which means they themselves had ordered it), but that the rights holders for the series didn't seem to notice it. This may change in the future; it was announced last week that Toei was creating its own in-house licensing division. Hopefully the new incarnation of Toei in the United States will be more successful than the last. According to a Geneon rep there is a "lockdown" of the license in the United States by Toei, although they would be interested themselves in the license if that changes. Incidentally, the relationship between Toei and TV Asahi (who aired the Sailor Moon anime), has grown stronger as the latter has invested further into the former. As far as I know, there's been no change in the status of the Sailor Moon "Wii" Rumor. If someone knows otherwise, please write to us.
