The Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency (which belongs to the larger Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology) recently released the results of two polls it held last year. Here's a summary of what the survey is about (translation my own):
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its Arts Festival, the Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency held a survey of the top 100 media representing Japan between July 13th, 2006 and August 31st, 2006. The survey was performed via the web for regular voters, and mailed to media professionals selected by the cultural affairs agency (artists, editors, etc.).
209,284 ballots were obtained from 33,884 voters. Categories were split into "Arts, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga."
Sailor Moon ranked 38th place in the list of Top 50 animated works. Unfortunately it did not rank within the top 50 manga. A translation of the entire Top 50 anime list is available at Japan Probe. Voters were able to select from a list of pre-selected works, but were also able to write-in 10 of their own. It's nice to see Sailor Moon get recognition as an important media/work of art that "represents" Japan. Last, I wanted to mention that WikiMoon has been achieving phenomenal growth lately and we're very proud of the way the website is developing. The front page has had 200,000 hits in just one year, and we're closing in on 2,000,000 hits across the whole of the site, with over 2,500 articles in the database. The site is already an amazing resource for general Sailor Moon knowledge, but the project has always had a second goal of becoming a record of "Sailor Moon fandom" in the West. As the history of English-language Sailor Moon fandom has largely been tied to the internet- websites, newsgroups, campaigns, you name it, we recently opened "Wikimoon Web." There's very little there now, and we'd like your help with is starting to grow the site, mainly its "Archive" section. If you know of web-related entities (sites, mailinglists, etc.) that have made notable contributions to Sailor Moon fandom over the last 15 years (including now-defunct entities), please add them with a brief and unbiased description.
