Mini-Update - Jay Navok

Doujinshi fun time

A doujinshi, for those who don't know, is a Japanese comic book drawn independent of the big publishers, and usually featuring characters from a famous commercial work of anime or manga. Kind of like the equivalent of a fanfic, except its drawn and published. Its not exactly legal in Japan, but the market is huge, and a lot of times the big publishers find their up-and-coming artists from seeing which doujinshi are popular. For the most part, doujinshi tend to be of a pornographic nature. When it comes to Sailor Moon doujinshi, Uranus and Neptune are a favourite of the hentai doujinshi makers.  A few weeks ago I found an interesting non-hentai doujinshi on ebay:

Uranus/Neptune doujinshi are typically fun for the whole family!

What was curious about it is that it says its based on the Sailor Moon musicals or Sera Myu. We'll have plenty more on the musicals later this weekend, but if you're not familiar with them, just know that they're out there, and they're wacky.

How or why someone would make a doujinshi based on the musicals, I couldn't understand, so I bought it. It arrived yesterday.

The book consists of a number of gag strips, pages, etc. that make fun of the characters in light of the musicals. Sometimes the characters are watching one of the musicals, sometimes they're just hanging around (the concession stand, for instance), and sometimes things make absolutely no sense.

In the next few weeks I'll be randomly posting some scans from the book, for your amusement. I'll translate what I can, but the book's text is handwritten and handwritten Japanese is absolute hell. Today we've got three images for you. Click on them to see the full-size picture.

I've translated this one for you.

With this one, translation wouldn't help.

I've no f@#king clue.
It says on the right, "We're sorry we added a page on watermelon!"

Since there are a lot of doujinshi fans on the staff, you can look forward to more articles on doujinshi in the future.

And this weekend look forward to some Sera Myu reviews.
