In the Dream series of the manga and in the SuperS series of the anime, the sailor soldiers and Tuxedo Mask fight the enemies of the Dead Moon.  The Dead Moon group poses as a circus and comes to Tokyo as the Dead Moon Circus.  Queen Nehellenia, the wicked ruler of the Dead Moon, controls some of the most unusual creatures in the Bishjo Senshi Sr Mn continuities.  Luckily, Sailor Moon and her friends manage to beat the enemies in the end.  Some of those enemies even change sides and become friends with the heroes.

This article explains the names of the major characters who are closely associated with Dead Moon in the anime and manga continuities.  It also provides images of the characters from those continuities.  Some of the characters have names that are the same as the names of certain kinds of minerals and gemstones.  Readers may see images of those minerals and gemstones in the Mineral Exhibition section of this article.

The Terms Amazon and Amazones

Thorough explanations of the two terms Amazon and Amazones are in the older Amazones Quartetto and Amazones, not “Amazoness” articles.  This is a synopsis of those two articles:

The Amazon ( Amazon) in Amazon Trio ( Amazon Torio) refers to the Amazon rainforest in South America (which is what the anime and manga suggest).  The three men, by definition, cannot be Amazons because they are not women.  ( Amazon Torio is sometimes abbreviated to Amazon or Torio in the anime episode titles.)  The Amazones ( Amazonesu) in Amazones Quartetto ( Amazonesu Karutetto) refers to a) the Amazons from classical mythology (which is what the manga suggests) and b) the group of girls (which is what the anime suggests).  That explanation is not dependent on our own definitions of the words.  There is no reason to use a non-standard English term (Amazoness = Amazon + -ess) and a non-standard definition of an existing term (Amazon = a man).  It is actually more appropriate to use a standard Greek term (Amazones = the Amazons) and a standard definition of an existing term (Amazon = the rainforest).  For that reason, this article will not use the common “Amazoness Quartet” spelling.

Even if the Amazoness spelling is intended, that does not mean that it comprises the suffix -ess.  It could simply be an alteration of Amazones.  The notion that it is an alteration of Amazones requires fewer terms than the notion that it comprises the aforementioned suffix.

The Terms Trio and Quartetto

Both the English language and the Italian language use the term trio, which refers to a group three people or things.  When the Japanese wish to approximate that term in their script, they use the katakana characters torio.  The English language uses the terms quartet and quartette to refer to a group of four people or things, but those spellings derive from the Italian quartetto1.  The katakana-character combination karutetto can approximate the Italian form of the word2: quartetto.  That katakana-character combination contains sounds that are closer to the sounds in the Italian word (quartetto) than to the sounds in the English word (quartet), but at least one Bishjo Senshi Sr Mn source actually shows “quartet.”

Amazones Quartetto (or Amazones Quartet) may be translated into English as Amazons Quartet.  That translation may seem awkward to fans who are not used to see it.  However, some of the other names in the anime and manga are awkward grammatically: Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity, Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon, Venus Wink Chain Sword, and Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber.

Queen Nehellenia
[ Jo Neherenia]

The leader of the Dead Moon and its circus calls herself Queen Nehellenia.  In the manga, she appears to be a dark version of the good Queen Serenity.  Nehellenia appeared before Queen Serenity as asked her to accept the darkness, but Queen Serenity sealed the evil queen inside a mirror.  Before the seal was complete, Nehellenia cursed Queen Serenity: the Silver Millennium would be destroyed.  In the present, Sailor Moon and her comrades finally fight the queen and defeat her.  In the Stars series, Sailor Moon learns that Nehellenia is another manifestation of Chaos, a powerful evil monster inside the Galaxy Cauldron.

The anime version of Nehellenia was not always evil.  She originally was a ruler of an unknown kingdom.  The members of her court admired and respected her.  She looked in the mirror to see the future of her dream, but she saw an ugly and old version of herself.  She learned that she could stay beautiful if she could capture the Dream Mirrors of her people.  She took those Dream Mirrors, and her people became the Lemures, the evil creatures that help her.  Queen Serenity sealed Nehellenia in a mirror.  That mirror ended up in the jungle of the Asteroid Belt (source: Bishjo Senshi Sr Mn SuperS: Nakayoshi Media Book #5) and the Amazones Quartetto found it.  The girls apparently released Nehellenia, and Nehellenia gives them four Amazon Stones.  She began to look for the Golden Crystal so that she can take over the moon and Earth.  She finally found it and captured Helios, the guardian of the Golden Crystal.  The Golden Crystal is the horn of Pegasus.  We see her take the crystal.  The sailor soldiers find that they cannot beat her.  Jun Jun plays a trick on Nehellenia and manages to get the Golden Crystal.  Nehellenia eventually returns to her mirror prison.  Later, Sailor Galaxia gets Nehellenia angry enough to want to get revenge on the sailor soldiers.  (We get to see her Jet-black Mirror [ Shikkoku no Kagami].  Sailor Galaxia commands her to break it.)  The sailor soldiers come inside Nehellenia’s mirror world to save the kidnapped Mamoru.  With the help of Eternal Sailor Moon, Nehellenia remembers her real dream: to have friends and to be loved.  Nehellenia gets another chance and ends up back in her court.

Nehellenia’s anime chant is Yumeyume utagau koto nakare yumemiru kodomo no yume no yume,” which means “Do not ever doubt the dreams of the dreams of children who dream.”

Nehellenia, the queen of the Dead Moon, has the same name as the Celtic and Teutonic goddess Nehellenia ( Neherenia)4.  People usually write the goddess’ name as Nehalennia ( Neharenia).  Nehalennia is a goddess associated with abundance and sea-faring honored in the Zeeland area of the Netherlands.  The queen of the Dead Moon has a flying ship and her mythological counterpart often stands on ships in votive altars.  Some of those votive altars of Nehalennia resemble Nehellenia in her mirror.  According to The Woman’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, the goddess has been called “Nether Moon.”  The netherworld is the realm of the dead, which reflects Queen Nehellenia’s role as ruler of the Dead Moon.

Zirconia
[ Jirukonia]

An ugly creature that calls herself Zirconia commands the Amazon Trio (in the anime) and Amazones Quartetto (in the anime and manga).  She does not look like a female, but the characters think of her as one.  She has a voice of an old woman in the anime.  In the manga, Zirconia seems to be the guiding soul of Nehellenia.  One could consider her a mirror image of her queen.  She eventually commands Zircon (her flying eyeball) to trap the Amazones Quartetto in four Amazon Stones.  She also traps Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Saturn into glass shards.  At one point, she shoots a beam through Usagi and Mamoru, but we learn that the effect is nothing but an evil nightmare.  Zirconia eventually goes into Nehellenia’s mirror and Sailor Moon follows her inside.  Unfortunately, the other sailor soldiers cannot enter.  Later, Sailor Jupiter breaks the glass of the mirror with her fist.  Zirconia talks about how Nehellenia will not die.  Then, she disappears.

Although the true connection between Zirconia and Nehellenia is not apparent in the anime, it does seem that Zirconia is Nehellenia’s evil mirror reflection.  Zirconia commands the Amazon Trio to find people with beautiful dreams.  Pegasus, who holds the Golden Crystal, has been hiding in someone’s dream.  After the Amazon Trio leave, the Amazones Quartetto look for the Dream Mirrors of people.  Zirconia does not seem to like the four girls because they act like young children.  She eventually disappears when Nehellenia finally leaves her mirror prison.

Zirconia probably got her name from the synthetic gemstone Cubic Zirconia ( Kybikku Jirukonia)5.  Cubic Zirconia is used in jewelry as an artificial diamond.  The Dead Moon’s Zirconia might have gotten her name from the crystalline oxide named Zirconia ( Jirukonia)6.

Zircon
[ Jirukon]

On Zirconia’s staff sits a flying eyeball that has the name Zircon.  In the manga, Zirconia uses Zircon to trap the Amazones Quartetto into four Amazon Stones.  In the anime, Zircon often spies on potential victims.  In both continuities, Zircon usually can be found on Zirconia’s staff.

Zircon got its name from the mineral Zircon ( Jirukon).  That mineral is a common mineral occurring in small crystals.  It is used as a refractory when opaque and as a gem when transparent.7

Tiger’s-eye
[ Taigzu Ai]

The cross-dressing man named Tiger’s-eye originally was a tiger.  In the manga, the Amazones Quartetto create Tiger’s-eye and the other two members of the Amazon Trio.  The four girls send Tiger’s-eye to steal Rei’s dreams and replace those dreams with nightmares.  Phobos and Deimos appear in their fairy forms and help Rei become Sailor Mars.  Sailor Mars uses her Mars Flame Sniper maneuver to defeat Tiger’s-eye.

In the anime, Tiger’s-eye plays a bigger part in the story.  Zirconia commands the Amazon Trio to find people with beautiful dreams.  Pegasus, who carries the Golden Crystal as his horn, is supposed to be hiding in someone’s beautiful dream.  Tiger’s-eye often targets pretty and young women such as Unazuki (Motoki’s sister) and Reika (Motoki’s girlfriend).  Zirconia eventually becomes tired of the Amazon Trio’s failures.  She informs them that they were cursed.  They will revert to their original forms if they do not complete the task by the next new moon.  In Tiger’s-eye’s case, he will become a tiger again.  One of the Lemures named Mr. Magic Pierrot goes after the Trio, and he wounds Hawk’s-eye.  Mr. Magic Pierrot manages to beat Chibi Usa and Usagi, but Tiger’s-eye and Fisheye save the girls.  After the Amazon Trio lose their strength, Sailor Moon defeats Mr. Magic Pierrot.  Pegasus saves the Amazon Trio.  He also lets them stay in his dark forest.

Tiger’s-eye of the Amazon Trio got his name from the gemstone Tiger’s-eye ( Taigzu Ai).  Tiger’s-eye is a yellow-brown, semiprecious chatoyant gemstone consisting of quartz with parallel veins of silicified altered crocidolite8.

Hawk’s-eye
[ Hkusu Ai]

The cross-dressing man named Hawk’s-eye originally was a hawk.  In the manga, the Amazones Quartetto create Hawk’s-eye and the other two members of the Amazon Trio.  The four girls send Hawk’s-eye to steal Makoto’s dreams and replace those dreams with nightmares.  A smaller version of Sailor Jupiter appears and helps Makoto become Sailor Jupiter.  Sailor Jupiter uses her Jupiter Oak Evolution maneuver to defeat Hawk’s-eye.

In the anime, Hawk’s-eye plays a bigger part in the story.  Zirconia commands the Amazon Trio to find people with beautiful dreams.  Pegasus, who carries the Golden Crystal as his horn, is supposed to be hiding in someone’s beautiful dream.  Hawk’s-eye often targets (or wishes to target) older women such Mayako.  Zirconia eventually becomes tired of the Amazon Trio’s failures.  She informs them that they were cursed.  They will revert to their original forms if they do not complete the task by the next new moon.  In Hawk’s-eye’s case, he will become a hawk again.

Hawk’s-eye of the Amazon Trio got his name from the gemstone Hawk’s-eye ( Hkusu Ai).  Hawk’s-eye is a transparent colorless quartz containing closely packed, parallel fibers of crocidolite that impart to it a blue color9.

Fisheye
[ Fisshu Ai]

The cross-dressing man named Fisheye originally was a fish.  In the manga, the Amazones Quartetto create Fisheye and the other two members of the Amazon Trio.  The four girls send Fisheye to steal Ami’s dreams and replace those dreams with nightmares.  A smaller version of Sailor Mercury appears and helps Ami become Sailor Mercury.  Sailor Mercury uses her Mercury Aqua Rhapsody maneuver to defeat Fisheye.  The manga version of Fisheye does not seem to be homosexual, but his anime version does.

In the anime, Fisheye plays a bigger part in the story.  Zirconia commands the Amazon Trio to find people with beautiful dreams.  Pegasus, who carries the Golden Crystal as his horn, is supposed to be hiding in someone’s beautiful dream.  Fisheye often targets handsome young men and boys such as Robert (who goes to Chibi Usa’s school) and Yoshiki Usui (a fashion designer).  Zirconia eventually becomes tired of the Amazon Trio’s failures.  She informs them that they were cursed.  They will revert to their original forms if they do not complete the task by the next new moon.  In Fisheye’s case, he will become a fish again.

Fisheye of the Amazon Trio got his name from the mineral Fisheye Stone10 ( Fisshu Ai Sutn11), which is usually called Apophyllite ( Apofiraito).  Apophyllite is a mineral relating to the zeolites.  Sometimes the Japanese call Apophyllite Gyoganseki, which means fish eye stone12.
