This section provides some important information about Sailor Crystals, non-Sailor Crystal starseeds, and people who carry those objects. Notice that this information pertains specifically to the manga.
What Starseeds and Sailor Crystals Are
In the manga, all things with life grow from starseeds. A starseed is the source of a living thing. We learn about starseeds that are Sailor Crystals vis-à-vis non-Sailor Crystal starseeds. Only those two starseed types are important to the story. There is no indication that there is another kind. If there is a third kind, is not relevant to the story.
What the Shadow Galactica Characters Want
We have evidence that tells us that Sailor Galaxia and her followers wish to remove and take the starseeds that are Sailor Crystals. There is nothing that tells us that they wish to remove and take non-Sailor Crystal starseeds. The claim that the Shadow Galaxia characters wish to remove and take non-Sailor Crystal starseeds simply cannot be supported in any of the sources. (Since all Sailor Crystals are starseeds, if someone refers to a starseed as a starseed, that does not mean that it is not a Sailor Crystal.) Sailor Galaxia specifically removes and takes the crystals of Mamoru, Sailor Venus, and Sailor Mars. Sailor Aluminum Seiren takes the crystals of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mercury. Sailor Lead Crow specifically removes and takes the crystals of Phobos and Deimos. (Phobos and Deimos are miniature women from the planet Coronis who do not become Sailor Phobos and Sailor Deimos. They are the partners of Sailor Mars, and their names suggest that they may be representatives of their respective Martian moons.) It is not known who takes the crystals of Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, and Sailor Saturn, but we do know that their crystals are used to make those sailor soldiers serve under Sailor Galaxia.
If some particular starseeds are what the Shadow Galactica characters wish to remove and take, then those starseeds are Sailor Crystals. The Shadow Galactica characters wish to remove and take the starseeds of Mamoru, Phobos, and Deimos. Therefore, those three starseeds are Sailor Crystals. (The conclusion is true because of modus ponens.)
Guardian Soldiers and Sailor Crystals
According to Ms. Takeuchi, only females can be sailor soldiers. Mamoru cannot be a sailor soldier because he is a man. Yaten tells us in act 46 that Sailor Crystals eventually become guardian soldiers. (The guardian soldiers get their powers from their Sailor Crystals). So, the claim that only sailor soldiers can have Sailor Crystals is not necessarily true. After Yaten tells us that the Sailor Crystals eventually become guardian soldiers, she lists the names of several guardian soldiers and the planets that those soldiers protect. (She also mentions the names of several of the Sailor Anima-Mates, but those characters do not protect their respective planets.) Usagi immediately responds: “And in this solar system... Mercury by Sailor Mercury, Venus by Sailor Venus, Mars by Sailor Mars, Jupiter by Sailor Jupiter. And Earth, by me and Mamo-chan....” When Usagi and Yaten mention the guardian soldiers who protect celestial bodies, they are referring to the ones who grew from Sailor Crystals. We know that people who grow from Sailor Crystals have those Sailor Crystals as their source of power. Their starseeds are Sailor Crystals. If we say that Mamoru is not one of those guardian soldiers, then we are making an arbitrary distinction.
Not Just Sailor Soldiers Have Sailor Crystals
The crystals of Mamoru, Phobos, and Deimos appear as dipyramid
crystals, and crystals that we know are Sailor Crystals can also be dipyramid crystals. The notion that the crystals of Mamoru, Phobos, and Deimos are not Sailor Crystals undoubtedly derives from the notion that only sailor soldiers can have Sailor Crystals. The latter notion seems intuitive because of the Sailor
in Sailor Crystal
. However, that notion assumes
that the Sailor
in Sailor Crystal
is telling us that only sailor soldiers have Sailor Crystals. Nothing tells us such a thing, though. The meaning of the Sailor
in Sailor Crystal
is never explained. I am certainly not going to assume that I know what it means. Even if the Sailor
in Sailor Crystal
refers to the fact that all sailor soldiers have Sailor Crystals (which is likely), that does not mean that only sailor soldiers have Sailor Crystals.
As we have seen above, Mamoru should be a guardian soldier who grew from a Sailor Crystal. His source of power should be a starseed that is a Sailor Crystal. (He is never shown to have more than one starseed.) Sailor Crystals can belong to guardian soldiers, not strictly sailor soldiers. Mamoru and his Sailor Crystal show that not all people who own Sailor Crystals (i.e. grew from starseeds that are Sailor Crystals) must be sailor soldiers. Moreover, according to the Materials Collection, Sailor Galaxia wishes to take the Sailor Crystals from the senshi (soldiers, fighters, characters who fight) of the galaxy. The notion that only sailor soldiers can have Sailor Crystals cannot be supported. So, people who fight can have Sailor Crystals. Phobos and Deimos, at least in their crow forms, fight at least once in the manga story. (Both of them fight when they attack Tiger’s-Eye. They hit him with their dart-like feathers.) Technically, they are characters who fight, so they can have Sailor Crystals. Phobos and Deimos might have been (or they might presently be) training soldiers, but they are senshi nevertheless.
Sailor Chibi Moon and King Endymion
In act 49, we see pictures of the bodies of Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Pluto, and King Endymion lying down with lights over their chests. In the same panel, we can see the word balloons of Sailor Chibi Moon that say “Their Sailor Crystals were shining like a signal, and all their bodies faded...!” Those pictures logically tell us the antecedents of the “their” in the word balloons: Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Pluto, and King Endymion. They conveniently answer the questions “Whose Sailor Crystals were shining like a signal?” and “Whose bodies faded?” If King Endymion did not have a Sailor Crystal to shine, there would be no reason to show him. In this case, Sailor Chibi Moon is saying that King Endymion (a person who is not a sailor soldier) had a Sailor Crystal. (One could say that Sailor Chibi Moon is mistaken when she refers to the starseed of King Endymion as a Sailor Crystal. However, there is nothing that contradicts what she says. It is never claimed that only sailor soldiers can have Sailor Crystals even though there is a Sailor in the phrase Sailor Crystal.
Lead Crow Is After Sailor Crystals
Sailor Lead Crow talks about the light of starseeds are nearly hers. She never specifies exactly whose starseeds she is referring to, however. She could be referring to the starseeds of Phobos and Deimos. Since we know that she is after the starseeds (Sailor Crystals) of the sailor soldiers of the Solar System (she says that she will be come a real sailor soldier in exchange for those crystals), she could also be referring to those starseeds. Either way, she does not claim to be after starseeds that are not Sailor Crystals. According to what we know, the only kind of starseeds that the Shadow Galactica members wish to remove and take are Sailor Crystals. So, in this context, the “starseeds” that Sailor Lead Crow is after are Sailor Crystals. We would not be able to provide evidence that tells us that the Sailor Anima-Mates and the other members of the Shadow Galactica are after starseeds that are not Sailor Crystals.
Dipyramid and Crystalline Starseeds
In the manga, there is no indication that non-Sailor Crystal starseeds can be dipyramid shaped and crystalline (having the texture that we know that Sailor Crystals have) at the same time. In other words, not one dipyramid starseed has been defined to be a non-Sailor Crystal starseed. The dipyramid crystals are either referred to as starseeds or Sailor Crystals. If we cannot show that non-Sailor Crystal starseeds can be dipyramid and crystaline at the same time, then that idea cannot be supported.
Status of Sailor Crystals
We could say that the crystals of Phobos and Deimos are not Sailor Crystals because they are or were training soldiers. However, nobody claims that Phobos’ and Deimos’ statuses as training soldiers (whether they are training soldiers now or in the past) would affect the statuses of their starseeds. A carrier of a Sailor Crystal has to be at least a person who fights (senshi), as we have shown. Phobos and Deimos may be training soldiers, but they are still eligible to have Sailor Crystal even if they are in training.
What Phobos and Deimos Represent
So, what celestial bodies would Phobos and Deimos defend? We may not know what celestial bodies Phobos and Deimos represent, but we do not know specifically what celestial bodies the Sailor Starlights represent, either. Princess Kaky just tells us that they are the guardian soldiers of the Kinmoku star system. We do not even know what celestial bodies Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi represent if they do represent celestial bodies. If the myriad balls of light that flow out of the Galaxy Cauldron are going to be Sailor Crystals (they are in their “just starseed” form then) and they are going back to their celestial bodies as Sailor Cosmos tells us, then there are myriad Sailor Crystals associated with celestial bodies. We do not know the names of many of those celestial bodies. It is not known whether we know all of the names of the celestial bodies that all of the carriers of Sailor Crystals in the galaxy represent. We should not be expected to know all of the names of the celestial bodies when we are not given enough information. Since Phobos and Deimos share their names with the two moons of the planet Mars, the twins may represent those two moons. (They were born on the planet Coronis, but Sailor Crystal holders do not need to be born on the celestial bodies that they represent.) Guardian soldiers can represent hoshi, which can mean star Hoshi can also refer to any other celestial body: moons, planets, asteroids, et cetera. (Planet is the usual default translation of when it is used as a suffix, though.)
Lack of Sailor Soldier Name
Sailor Crystals eventually become guardian soldiers or people who fight. In order for an individual to have the power to be a Sailor Crystal-owning guardian soldier, and in order for him or her to benefit from the power of his or her own Sailor Crystal, that individual must already own his or her Sailor Crystal. It cannot be shown that a person’s lack of a sailor soldier name that contains “Sailor” affects his or her status as a Sailor Crystal-owning fighter.
The Cats’ Starseeds
We never see the cats (Luna, Artemis, and Diana) have crystalline starseeds. No crystals come out of the cats’ destroyed bodies. No balls of light appear on Luna’s and Artemis’ chests when the cats fade away in the thirtieth century. The members of the Shadow Galactica do not show any interest in the cats’ starseeds. Princess Kaky does not claim that the cats have Sailor Crystals. She says, “The starseeds of these ones have power and brilliance just like the sailor crystals,” but the Japanese words that she uses indicate that her comparison is supposed to be figurative.
Everyone’s Sailor Crystals
When Sailor Moon travels to Sailor Galaxia’s castle with Kaky and the others, she keeps talking about getting everyone’s Sailor Crystals back from Galaxia. She does not say, “everyone’s starseeds.” (There is no indication that any member of the Shadow Galactica takes the cats’ starseeds away from where the cats’ bodies are destroyed.)
Where Do Phobos’ and Deimos’ Crystals Go?
Sailor Lead Crow makes the crystals of Phobos and Deimos disappear in the same manner that Sailor Aluminum Seiren earlier makes the crystals of Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter disappear. When the two Sailor Anima-Mates make the crystals disappear, the sound effect is “fu.” (Later, “fu” sound effect comes up again when Sailor Galaxia makes a Garden Crystal disappear and reappear in another location near her palace.) We know that Sailor Galaxia eventually acquires the crystals of the two sailor soldiers. Where would the crystals of Phobos and Deimos go? Those crystals are dipyramid crystals, and one of the Shadow Galactica characters steals them. The Shadow Galactica characters wish to remove and take the Sailor Crystals (not non-Sailor Crystal starseeds). Not one dipyramid crystal has been defined to be a non-Sailor Crystal starseed. Not just sailor soldiers can have Sailor Crystals. Why, then, should we assume that the crystals of Phobos and Deimos go somewhere else besides to Sailor Galaxia or to the place outside Galaxia's palace where the Garden Crystal appears? At least we know of the destinations of the other crystals. It is possible that the crystals of Phobos and Deimos go somewhere else besides those two destinations, but we do not know where and we cannot say where because we simply do not have the evidence. We have evidence supporting the idea that other crystals ended up in those two destinations, but we do not have evidence supporting the idea that other crystals ended up elsewhere. For that reason, it is more likely that the crystals of Phobos and Deimos ended up in those two destinations.
