“Negima! Latinity”
The Latin Title Magister Negi Magi
The original Japanese version of the second manga volume defines the Magister as 先生 (meaning “teacher” or “master”), and Magi as 魔法使いの (meaning “of the mage”). Magister Negi Magi can mean Mage Master Negi (if Magi is interpreted as a appositional genitive). Negi’s name is Latinized elsewhere as Negius, so Magister Negius Magi would have been a more consistent Latin title.)
The second volume of the Del Rey Negima translation states that the Latin subtitle Magister Negi Magi means “Wizard Negi-Sensei.” That is not a terrible translation, but it is one that probably should be avoided. It also defines the Magi as “magical.” The word could be interpreted that way in certain situations, but by itself it means “of the mage.”
