Sailor Moon, her guardian soldiers, and Tuxedo Mask battle the enemies of the Dark Kingdom in the first series of the Bishjo Senshi Sr Mn manga and in the first series in the anime. The members of the Dark Kingdom work on earth to revive their leader Queen Metaria. In the Kdonmu wa Sr V, Sailor Venus fights the evil members of the Dark Agency. Danburite, the leader of the Dark Agency, tells us that he is under the command of the group of enemies from the Dark Kingdom named the Shitenn. It seems that the Dark Agency is a branch of the Dark Kingdom.
This article provides explanations of the names of the characters and groups of characters of the Dark Kingdom. It also includes brief descriptions of the anime and manga versions of those enemies. It should be noted that those descriptions are not supposed to be in-depth. The anime and manga versions of the Bad Seeds sections of Bunny's Tour of the Silver Millennium and Spirit-hime's Peppermint Storm Web site contain comprehensive descriptions.
[ Kuin Metaria]
Queen Metaria’s name appears as “QUEEN METARIA” in the third volume of the new version of the manga (Pretty Guardian Sailormoon). (DoseiNoSenshi gave me the scan.)
It is likely that Metaria and the katakana-character combination are alterations of the English word metal and the combination . (Metal and are not the names of minerals. However, since metals can be minerals, they still pertain to mineralogy.) Since that spelling appears in the manga, and we have not found anything inherently wrong with it, there is no reason to reject it. Some people still use the “Metallia” and “Metalia” spellings, but they do not appear in any Japanese anime or manga source.
The Latin word metaria can describe Queen Metaria in one sense. Metaria is a feminine noun and it means of boundaries or belonging to boundaries. In the manga, the characters mention that the evil creature was confined deep within Earth by a seal. The seal itself indicates the border between the outside and the inside while the edge of the seal is the border itself. Both are technically boundaries. When Metaria is bounded in the seal, those boundaries are pertinent to her. She can be thought of as metaria when she is in the seal in that sense.
Queen Metaria is the powerful leader of the Dark Kingdom ( Dku Kingudamu) who wants to steal energy and Sailor Moon’s Phantom Silver Crystal ( Maboroshi no Ginzuish).
In the anime, Queen Metaria, Queen Beryl, and the Shitenn attacked the moon a long time ago. Queen Serenity managed to seal the evil entities away. In the present, Queen Beryl and her followers collect energy so that they can revive Queen Metaria. Near the end, Queen Metaria combines with Queen Beryl to become Super Beryl ( Sp Beriru)1. (Many fans seem to think that Super Beryl is Queen Metaria) Sailor Moon (as Princess Serenity) and the spirits of her friends defeat the combined powers of the two enemies.
In the manga, Sailor Moon defeats Queen Metaria with the power of her Silver Crystal. Later in that continuity, we learn that Queen Metaria is another form of Chaos, who is looking for the Silver Crystal. Queen Metaria also has the power to change those who oppose her into stone.
The Japanese usually approximate the term queen by using the katakana characters kun. However, for some unknown reason, the katakana characters that approximate the Queen in Metaria’s title are kuin2.
[ Kuin Beriru]
The term beryl refers to a transparent to translucent glassy mineral. The transparent varieties in white, green, blue, yellow, or pink are valued as gems.3
The queen of the Dark Kingdom is Queen Beryl. She controls the Shitenn in the manga and anime. In the anime, Prince Endymion says that Queen Beryl is Queen Metaria’s avatar.
In the anime, she also commands a large army of Yma. In the past, she wanted to marry Prince Endymion so that she could rule the Earth and Moon with him. Queen Metaria manages to kill both the princess and prince. Queen Serenity, the ruler of the kingdom on the moon, used her Silver Crystal to seal Queen Beryl and her associates away. In the present, Queen Beryl and her minions collect energy so that they can bring back Queen Metaria. Queen Beryl eventually combines with Queen Metaria to become Super Beryl. Sailor Moon (as Princess Serenity) and the spirits of her friends defeat the combined powers of the two enemies.
In the manga, Beryl kills Prince Endymion with her sword in the past. Princess Serenity then uses that sword to kill herself. In the present, Sailor Venus kills Queen Beryl by stabbing her with a sword.
The Japanese usually approximate the term queen by using the katakana characters kun. However, for some unknown reason, the katakana characters that approximate the Queen in Beryl’s title are kuin4.
The Japanese term yma means monster, ghost, or apparition5. In the anime, Queen Beryl and the Shitenn use the Yma to help them steal energy, find the Silver Crystal, and attack the sailor soldiers. Only the anime features those Yma, but there is a creature like the Yma Morga in act 1 of the manga.
The members of the Group of Seven Yma ( Yma Shichi Nin Sh6) were sealed in seven fragments of the Silver Crystal. The fragments, which are named Rainbow Crystals ( Nijizuish), correspond to the seven common divisions of color of the rainbow. Those seven crystals eventually wound up inside humans on Earth. Queen Beryl gives Zoisite the Black Crystal ( Kurozuish) to help him find the crystals.
According to the Pretty Soldier Sailormoon Nakayoshi Anime Album II, the five Yma who call themselves the D.D. Girls are even more powerful the Group of Seven Yma7. Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Venus, and Sailor Jupiter manage to defeat the D.D. Girls, but they die, too.
My A List of Bishjo Senshi Sr Mn Anime "Monsters of the Days" shows the names of the Yma and their origins. Bunny’s Yma section shows pictures of all those creatures.
Shitenn (Four Heavenly Kings)
In Buddhist mythology, the Shitenn are warriors who protect the four cardinal points8. The god of the north is Tamonten (Sanskrit: Vaisravana). The god of the south is Schten (Sanskrit: Virudhaka). The god of the east is Jikokuten (Sanskrit: Dhrtarashtra). The god of the west is Kmokuten (Sanskrit: Virupaksha). Those four gods do not directly correspond to Jadeite and the others.
The Shitenn, in the manga, served under Prince Endymion in the past. Eventually, Queen Beryl turned them over to her side. We do not know whether the Shitenn served under Prince Endymion in the anime. In that continuity, they were present when Queen Metaria and Queen Beryl destroyed kingdom on the moon.
The term Jadeite refers to a rare and usually emerald to light green form of jade. (The mineral can sometimes be white, auburn, buff, or violet) It is used as a gem and for ornamental carvings. The name of the mineral derives from the term jade.9
The first of the Shitenn to appear in the anime and manga is Jadeite.
In the anime, Jadeite and the Yma usually disguise themselves as they gather energy from the humans. Jadeite eventually goes against Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars. He attempts to run them over with airplanes, but the sailor soldiers use their powers to move the airplanes back at the enemy. Jadeite manages to learn the identities of Sailor Moon and her friends, but Queen Beryl does not wish to listen to him. She puts him to sleep forever.
In the manga, Jadeite uses his monsters to attack his enemies. (Nephrite uses the phrase “dolls of soil” to refer to those monsters.) He is the commander of the Dark Kingdom’s Far Eastern Branch ( Dku Kingudamu Kyokut Shibu Ch10). Sailor Mars defeats him in act 3. Later in the manga, Jadeite and the other Shitenn appear in their spirit forms to tell their prince that they support his power.
The term Nephrite refers to a white to dark green variety of jade. The mineral’s name come from the Greek term , which means kidney11. People used to think that the mineral belief could cure kidney diseases.
The second of the Shitenn to appear in the anime and manga is Nephrite.
The anime version of Nephrite poses as a normal human and uses the name Masato Sanjin ( Sanjin Masato). In the anime, he uses the energy from the feelings of selected humans to create his Yma. Naru, Usagi’s friend, eventually falls in love with him. After Zoisite’s Yma injure Nephrite, Nephrite dies in Naru’s arms.
Nephrite is the commander of the Dark Kingdom’s North American Branch ( Dku Kingudamu Hokubei Shibu Ch12) in the manga. The manga version of Nephrite never gets to know about the existence of Naru. Queen Beryl sends Nephrite to find the Silver Crystal after Sailor Mars kills Jadeite. A young woman named Princess D posseses a treasure of her kingdom. Nephrite thinks that the treasure is the Silver Crystal, but we learn that the treasure is a statue of Princess D. In the next act, the revived Sailor Jupiter uses her powers to defeat Nephrite. Later in the manga, Nephrite and the other Shitenn appear in their spirit forms to tell their prince that they support his power.
The term Zoisite refers to a gray, brown, or pink mineral that is used in ornamental stonework. That mineral is named after the mineralogist Baron Sigismund Zois von Edelstein.13
The third of the Shitenn to appear in the anime and manga is Zoisite.
In the anime, Zoisite romantically loves Kunzite, who is another member of the Shitenn. The vain Zoisite worries much about his physical appearance. He pulls out the seven Rainbow Crystals from their holders, but he does not get them all at first. After he disobeys Queen Beryl’s orders, he suffers a fatal wound from the leader. Kunzite holds Zoisite as Zoisite dies on his death bed.
Zoisite is the commander of the Dark Kingdom’s European Branch ( Dku Kingudamu sh Shibu Ch14). He does not seem to love Kunzite in the manga, but the Materials Collection states that Zoisite is treated as Kunzite’s younger brother. After the sailor soldiers learn the truth of Zoisite’s scheme that involves the Rental Shop Dark, they confront him. When it seems tha Zoisite is about to defeat Sailor Moon and her friends, Sailor V kills Zoisite with her Crescent Boomerang. Later in the manga, Zoisite and the other Shitenn appear in their spirit forms to tell their prince that they support his power.
The term Kunzite refers to a lilac-colored spodumene used as a gemstone. That mineral is named after the mineralogist George Frederick Kunz15.
Kunzite, the leader of the Shitenn, is the fourth one to appear in the anime and manga.
Kunzite loves Zoisite romantically in the anime. He collects the seven Rainbow Crystals, but they combine to create the Silver Crystal. After Queen Beryl kills Zoisite, Kunzite begins to attack the sailor soldiers. Apparently, Kunzite has revenge on his mind. He manages to knock down Sailors Jupiter, Venus, Mars, and Mercury. Sailor Moon uses the power of the Silver Crystal to direct Kunzite’s attack back at him and he disappears. After Queen Beryl brainwashes Prince Endymion, the two warriors eventually become fierce rivals. He fights with the sailor soldiers again, but Sailor Moon reflects his bladed weapons back at him. The bladed weapons stab him and he dies.
In the manga, Kunzite is the commander of the Dark Kingdom’s Middle Eastern Branch ( Dku Kingudamu Cht Shibu Ch16). There does not seem to be any indication that Kunzite loves Zoisite romantically in the manga. According to the Materials Collection Zoisite, in the manga, is treated as Kunzite’s younger brother. In the story, Kunzite takes the body of Tuxedo Mask away. He says that he would return the body if Sailor Moon give him the Silver Crystal. The sailor soldiers perform their Sailor Planet Attack to defeat Kunzite. Later in the manga, Kunzite and the other Shitenn appear in their spirit forms to tell their prince that they support his power.
